Aboriginal Canadians in the Media

We were searching for articles on representation of Aboriginals. We found these three informative documents.

Henry, Frances and Carol Tator and Isobel M. Findlay, “Discourses of Domination: Racial Bias in the Canadian English-Language Press” Canadian Journal of Communication 28.1 (2003): 130

Using examples, this document discusses the portrayal of many minorities, including Aboriginals, in news stories in Canada. Also, how this affects socioeconomic opportunities and limitations. This article was useful because it includes the full text. It covered a broad range of the issues regarding Aboriginals unfair representation in media.

Zellen, Barry. “Introduction: Media and Aboriginal Culture; An Evolving Relationship” Cultural Survival Quarterly 22.2 (1998): 25

This concentrates on the Aboriginal struggle in television. It concentrates on the evolution of Canada’s Aboriginal television network: Television Northern Canada. Also, the article speaks of the struggle to maintain identity, especially language. Reading this article gave us an insight beyond mainstream media.

Farmer, Gary. "Native Language Survival: The Context of Radio and Television." Native Americas (1994):63

Aboriginals in Canada have an unfair disadvantage when it comes to Canadian news media. The English speaking Canadians don’t fully consider the language barriers between them and smallAboriginal communities. Aboriginals are underrepresented in media, especially radio and television. This article had the full text and was very informative as it raised some important issues on the way that Aboriginals are not included in Canadian news.
